Hungry Bin

The Hungry Bin is our favorite composting system and is how we farm all our worms. We combed the world for the best home vermiculture system and found Hungry Bin, a carbon-negative startup out of New Zealand. Hungry Bin is an excellent system for those working to sequester more carbon, divert food waste from landfills, keep worms, and improve soil health. It's an especially great system for those new to vermicomposting because it prevents "runaways," and requires minimal maintenance. You can keep it outdoors in the shade, or in indoors in a larger pantry, or mud-room. Hungry Bin creates the ideal living environment for compost worms through its tapered shape which compresses the castings, encouraging the worms to move to the surface layer to access fresh food. Compressed castings are easier to handle and largely free of worms. Nutrient dense worm-juice filters to the bottom catchment pan for easy collection. It is a simple process to collect both the castings and the liquid produced by your busy recycling worms. Simply put your kitchen scraps in the top, keep an eye on temperature, add bedding occasionally, and harvest high-quality organic fertilizers for your garden through worm castings and a nutrient-rich worm liquid. Dimensions are roughly 2'X2'X3' (650mm X 600mm X 950 mm.) Full Hungry Bins can weigh up to 400 lbs.
